Web Site Promotion is More Than Just SEO

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

In most cases, the success of any web site depends on the amount of traffic it receives, and the number of sales it generates. Many web sites seek visitors by pouring most of their time and budget into a single method of advertising: Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

While SEO is necessary for your web site, it should only be one part of your overall advertising program. Search engine rankings are pretty unstable and change all the time, but they are not the only source of bringing visitors to your web site.

What’s the best way to bring new traffic to your site? Links. Links are the way that people travel around the Internet. Links can come from all sorts of sites, not just Google or Yahoo or MSN. Consider listing your company in web directories, placing banner ads on other sites, or advertising in industry newsletters and publications. Any site that has a link to yours can bring new visitors and traffic. Yes, these inbound links may also help you with your search engine rankings, but the best links are those that are relevant and get clicked on!

Building steady traffic to your web site takes work, and not just in web site optimization. Be sure to use every advertising option available to you, such as using a pay per click ad campaign, entering your site into relevant competitions, participating in link exchanges, writing articles, case studies, white papers, etc. Don’t just depend on search engines to send web site traffic your way; get out there and take advantage of as many ways as you can think of to promote your site!

How to Know if Your SEO Keywords are Making Money

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

As you likely know by now, there is a big difference between effective, quality website content, and search engine optimized (SEO) website content that will obtain the highest ranks in search engines and directories such as Google, Yahoo!, and MSN. However, to apply SEO properly to your website, you first need to know which keywords to use. Once you have them, you also need to know if those keywords are working for you, or if you will need to tweak them to get better results. After all, a keyword is only as good as the money it makes for you.

The keyword itself is a certain word or phrase that someone would type into a search engine or web directory in order to find your website. The keyword you choose for any given page should describe that page in a way that a regular web surfer would search for it. The keyword should be a direct reflection of the content of that page. They should never contain any random or additional words that have nothing to do with you, your business, or your website. If they do contain these excess words, then you won’t obtain the maximum results from your SEO strategy.

Among the most widely accepted keyword strategies is that the number of keywords in a website should never exceed 21-22. There are sites out there that have well over six and seven hundred keywords, without any content to back those keywords up. Even if they did have content for every one of those keywords, there would be no point, since search engines will ignore any keyword over their limit of 22 words.

Keywords are each counted as one word. Key phrases, on the other hand, are also counted as one, no matter how many words make them up. For example, if you owned a computer company, a keyword could be “computers”. This would be counted as one word. However, you could also have a key phrase “discount computer company”, which would also be counted as one.

Even though key phrases are each counted as only one keyword, you should always keep them very short and straight to the point, without any excess words or puff.

To properly apply these keywords to your website, you first need to come up with a list of 21 or 22 keywords/key phrases that will describe your website content, such as the product or service you are selling. You then need to work them into your content, as well as into the site description coding and any additional information you submit to the search engines upon registration with them.

To identify the keywords, there are many different tools that you can use. You can pull them straight out of the air, have friends and colleagues brainstorm with you, or use one or two of many different softwares that are available for specifically that purpose. One of the most popular among these softwares is the Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool. You simply need to tell it what your site is about, and it will suggest a number of different potential keywords based on what has been searched for within the last past month.

By making sure that you’re using the right keywords, you’re much more likely to choose exactly the word or phrase that a web surfer might type when searching for what your site has to offer. This is the entire point of SEO. When done properly, you’ll increase the number of visitors to your site, and will therefore experience increased sales. Your website will be more visible, more find-able, and more successful, all by selecting the right wording. Though it may sound complex at first, once you get the hang of it, it does become much more routine. You must remember, though, that this is a time consuming process, and is something that you will need to maintain for the entire life of your website. If you don’t have the time or willingness to dedicate to your website, be certain to hire a professional to do it for you. It is definitely worth the extra few dollars that it will cost. The increased sales will pay for the SEO many times over.

It’s CNN! They Want To Talk To You!

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Being invited to appear on radio and television used to be reserved for top company executives and spokespersons. Until quite recently, the chance of being invited to make a media appearance was extremely small, even for the highest echelon. Today, almost anyone in responsible positions could be called on to interview.

Sweeping changes in broadcast and print media have created a multitude of channels and journals of specific interest; some of them global in nature. This information-starved media creates immense opportunities and significant challenges for individuals and organizations.

Disaster or opportunity?

Most people are very apprehensive and unprepared for media interviews and press conferences. Just one “off the cuff” comment or slip of the tongue and years of company image and personal career building can go right down the drain. However, to decline an appearance allows a great opportunity for getting your message out to disappear without a trace.

So how do you turn a potential disaster into an enormous advantage? By learning some simple rules and doing some on-camera training, you can learn the skills required to do credit to yourself, your organization and your industry. If a television appearance is imminent, arrange a visit to your local television studio to watch the news being broadcast. It may surprise you.

Handling that critical call from the press

The caller is usually a member of the production team, customarily a researcher. In some cases, the caller may be the journalist who wants to interview you. He or she is not a receptionist or a telephonist. You should be careful how you handle your conversation with them. Interview the caller and write down their answers. Their willingness to respond is an exceptional indicator of their integrity.

Do not rush to accept or decline the interview, just ask the following questions:

• What is the name of the broadcaster or publication?

• What is the name of the program or working title of the article?

• Who is the journalist, correspondent or interviewer?

• Why is this article being written or program being made? (They probably know something you don’t know.)

• What is their angle? (Journalists always take an editorial approach or slant to stories. This is the story’s angle.)

• Who else’s views are being sought? Who else will be there?

• Will it be broadcast live or recorded; in a studio or on location?

• When do they want you?

• Are they showing any videos, models or graphics during the segment or program? And when can someone from you organization come to see them? (This is so that you are not taken by surprise.)

• If you have your materials, can they be included? (These would have to be prepared in advance and the integration of these would take some time to rehearse prior to the actual broadcast.)

Tell the caller that you will get back to them in 10 minutes

This gives you time to decide what to do. Your decision should not be based on fear or flattery. It should be a normal management decision. You should not refuse as a matter of course since the presenter could refer to your refusal on air and create the impression of guilt by refusal.

You need to ask yourself the following questions?

• Is appearing of benefit to me?

• Is it of benefit to my company?

• Am I the best person to appear?

• Do we want to be seen to associate with the other guest or guests?

• Do we have adequate preparation time?

• Does the journalist or program have a good reputation?
• Do we trust the journalist?

• What will happen if we do not accept the invitation?

Accept or decline?

It is of absolutely no use to accept the invitation if you will be faced with a couple of zealots, radicals or a protagonist who hates everything you do and everything you stand for. It is also impossible to compete with a highly edited tape feature, which negatively expounds the issue without you having your own taped segment to refute and set the record straight. You should remember that when appearing on the media, you are your organization, and even your industry, personified. Reputations and careers are at stake here!

If, after careful consideration, you do accept the interview, then extensive prior planning is required to turn this challenge into a golden opportunity. An opportunity which effectively allows you to communicate your message to an extremely large audience, sometimes numbering in the tens or hundreds of millions.

Is Directory Submission Obsolete?

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

“Directories are sooooo 2003.” “Remember BlueFind?” “I thought Google hated directories.”

Many people think that directories have become obsolete. The truth however is that while their SEO importance has decreased in the last few years, they should still be an integral part of link building for new sites.

Of course, you should no longer submit to directories just for PageRank. As search engines analyze user data and integrate this information into their algorithm, the traffic you receive from a link becomes paramount again. (Shouldn’t it have been this way all along? I digress…) The point is, if you can get relevant traffic from a directory listing, then it’s still a viable marketing channel. And it can still be an effective SEO method, as well (we’ll get to that).

Thus the question shouldn’t be, “Should I submit to directories?”, but rather, “Which directories should I submit to?” The answer is that you should submit to directories that either:

a) will send traffic, or

b) have listings that will be considered editorial votes of quality by major search engines.

Did you know that specifically mentions both the Yahoo Directory and The Open Directory (DMOZ) in their Webmaster Guidelines (see http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html )? This implies that Google believes links from the two mentioned directories are indeed editorial votes of quality. These “trusted links” are the type a site needs to both break out of “the sandbox”, and to rank highly in the current (hard to crack) Google.

Of course, I do recommend submitting to more than just the aforementioned two “directory kings” (Yahoo! and DMOZ). It becomes a matter of sorting through the low quality “rough” out there to find the directory “diamonds.” For starters, Best of the Web, MSN bCentral, Gimpsy, and Business.com all have editorial integrity at a level which probably ensures that search engines “trust” their links. Outside of these, there are a few others on the “top tier”, but beware of any that sell sitewide links, as that practice all but ensures that Google won’t trust the directory’s editorial integrity.

What about the rest? Submitting to lower quality directories may not propel your site to the top of Google, but my recent research suggests it is still a very efficient link building method to build rankings in both MSN and Yahoo!. I have never been one to put all my eggs in the Google basket, so I still regularly use these second tier directories to quickly (and cheaply!) get my sites to the top of these engines.

In conclusion, directory submission should still have a place in your link building strategy. If you are going for Google rankings alone, you should probably stick only to the top tier directories whose listings are considered editorial votes of quality by Google. If you are going for rankings in MSN and Yahoo!, you can cheaply build a slew of effective links by submitting your site to many of the lower quality directories. And of course, if you are trying to rank in all 3 major search engines, you should probably do both of the above. Either way, don’t write off directories just yet!

Realtors, Start Using Google Analytics

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

Realtors are you looking for a way to track visitors to your website. Advertising has always been the life blood of the real estate industry, but it has always been difficult to judge what advertising was working. In mid November Google announced a new free service called “Google Analytics”. Google had previously offered this service under the name “Urchin”. Urchin was a wonderful way to track traffic through your website. However, Urchin cost around $299 per month, and was out of the reach of most small businesses. Well get ready for some good news. Google Analytics can help Realtors use performance data to improve their online marketing campaigns and websites. With Google Analytics, realtors can determine what keywords attract the most visitors, which email campaigns create more customers, and how to design web pages that hold people’s attention. Best of all, it is completely free if you have an active Google “AdWords” pay per click advertising account.

“We want to give all online marketers and publishers access to powerful web analytics to help them better understand what their customers want. With this knowledge, businesses can create more accurate advertising and build better websites,” said Paul Muret, Google engineering director, and one of the founders of Urchin. “By making this powerful service free, we aim to give all websites, large and small, the tools they need to better serve their customers, make more money, and improve the web experience for everyone”.

Google Analytics tracks all of your online marketing. Be it email, newsletters, pay per click, natural search results, or any other online advertising you can think of. Get visual summaries of traffic in the form of graphs and pie charts. Track conversions on your real estate website without hunting through complicated reports. You will quickly see any problem areas. Get real time feed back on your Google pay per click, or Yahoo advertising campaigns. See what keywords your customers are using to find your real estate website. The Google analytics dashboard gives you a clear visual format that is fast and easy to digest.

If you have an AdWords account, you can access Google Analytics directly from your AdWords control panel. Google Analytics also saves you time by automatically importing all your keyword data from AdWords. So you see return on investment and other key metrics for every keyword you have in your AdWords pay per click advertising campaign with no extra effort on your part, just by using Google Analytics.

If your a professional realtor with a website, you should be using a Google pay per click advertising campaign to promote your real estate website. You can list the keywords that you want to use. You can customize your ads within minutes. You can change your ads on the fly and see the results live on Google in ten minutes. Setting up a Google advertising account only takes about ten minutes and the start up cost is five dollars. Once your real estate advertising campaign is in place Google analytics will show you what is working and just as importantly, what’s not working. Just setting up an account is easy enough, however it is a good idea to seek the help of a full time Google AdWords professional. A professionally created AdWords advertising campaign can save you from some expensive mistakes and can help you get the positive results you are looking for in a very short time.

Visitors Through Search Engines

Monday, December 29th, 2008

You have your site into the search engines, but where are all the visitors? As a webmaster or site owner, you have probably received the email ads or seen advertisements of “guaranteed search engine rankings and more visitors” and so on. It sounds really good, until you see the price tag, and the rest of this article. Are there other forms of advertising and better ways to get traffic?

Good search engines can do a variety of things for a variety of people. They provide ease when the user is trying to find something online. Without search engines, the internet would not be the same. It would be much more complicated. Now, with all the hype about search engines and the visitors they can bring, “Is it possible?”

First off, any program offering a guaranteed ranking is a scam. Google’s search results are based upon PageRank and relevancy. It is an automated process. Google does not have the thousands of people needed to manually set a site’s ranking for each individual keyword. Let’s examine the term “ranking.” You site will have a many “rankings.” It will have a different ranking for every keyword in the site. For instance, if a user searches “dog tricks,” your site may come up at number seventeen. If you also offer webmaster tools and a user searches “adopting a puppy,” your site could show up as the four-hundredth site in Google’s list. How can an optimization company guarantee a certain ranking? They can not! They can guarantee a ranking (every site has a ranking), what that ranking is, no one can tell. Sure, rankings do affect how many visitors you will get through search engines, but the safest way to get those visitors is to offer something unique, have a variety of good content, and use search engine friendly URLs. Do not be fooled by those scams and fake promises. That leads us to the solution, how you can get visitors through search engines.

To get results with search engines, there are three things you must have. The first is good content. If a website is filled with a bunch of banner ads and links, it will not have a good ranking. A website needs “meat.” It needs content and a focus. Your website can cover a general topic like “Computers and Internet” (I wouldn’t recommend it) but do not try to cover everything on the planet like About.com. Second, your site needs incoming links. These links are not one’s you exchange with other companies. Exchanging links can even be harmful. Engine’s spiders can now detect those and they have next to no relevancy. If a visitor likes you site, they could add a link to you on their site or tell their friend. Another way to gain links is submitting content, which is explained later in the article. Third, make clear what your website is about. Use your keywords (words that tell a user what your site is about) throughout your page. Although some search engines are moving away from Meta tags, you will still want to use them. Choose a descriptive title and write a good description. The keywords aren’t so important provided you use them in the content of your site.

If your site can not seem to get a high search engine ranking and you want visitors then you have two options. First, a site owner can choose to pay for visitors through something such as a Pay-Per-Click program, like Google’s AdWords. This is the safest way to go because it is guaranteed visitors through a trusted company, but it will cost you. It will cost a couple cents a click which will add up in the long run. If you choose this type of campaign, make sure you have signed up with a quality and respected company which has many places to publish your ad, like Google or Yahoo. Pay-per-click campaigns are great if you have money, but if money is an issue settle for another form of advertising.

Despite popular speculation and what advertising companies want you to think, you do not have to pay to get visitors. However, not paying could take longer to gain visitors. I would call it “free advertising for a particular service.” Visitors can come through submissions to other sites. If you have a particular talent, like building websites or writing, you can get visitors. Let’s use a talent for website designing as an example. You can build website templates (a webpage that has a preset design, which a site owner just adds content too) and submit them to free template sites. These sites will display your product but along with it they will display your link. Many free template sites accept submissions and I have seen traffic jump dramatically in as little as two days. If you can write articles, you can submit them to E-zine (online magazines) directories where E-zine publishers look for articles to publish. There are hundreds of categories to write about and there is more than likely a category for everyone. The E-zine will publish the author info and your site’s URL which in itself is a free advertisement.

Follow these guidelines, and you are on your way to gaining high-quality visitors to the site you own.

Easy Tips To Avoid Google Click Fraud

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Many web site owners are getting their Google Adsense account terminated. I read on the forums almost daily posts from people who are bemoaning the fact that Google has terminated their account when they feel they have done nothing wrong to deserve the punishment. In almost every case, click fraud is the reason for termination.

Click fraud is the act of clicking on ads for the purpose of costing the advertiser money. It is simply the same as paying out cash for false leads. Many website owners are aware of this fraud, and share the same sentiment that this is the one big problem that Adsense is facing.

How do you prevent yourself from being involved in this fraud?

The majority of web hosts offer access logs. If you are notified of click fraud and possible termination of your account by Google, it is necessary that you hand over these logs to them to clarify your situation. This allows them to look for any suspicious activity on your site. Problems like this are very serious and giving it to them is a show of good faith that you want to help Google in any way you can to attempt to solve the problem.

It can also help if you have a click monitoring software. There are many good programs available, but it is important that you get a program that has no limitations. there are free programs available, but I would suggest that you get a script from a certified expert in this field. I highly recommend using William Bontrager’s script, available at http://bontragercgi.com/programs/clickwatch. Mr Bontrager will install this script on one site for you after the purchase of the software, and will show you how to add the script to other sites. Free scripts are also available on the Internet if you are limited in funds. Remember, you get what you pay for. As usual, all the information you will receive from your tracking software should be turned over to Google. This is showing Google that you too are fighting against click frauds and is in no way a part of it.

Study your server logs and watch for any activity that seems suspicious. Report anything that you may find odd, may it big or small thing. Look for large spikes in traffic, and suspicious activity in files and folders where people would not normally have access to. Remember, that when working on your site, that you will access these files and folders. It is suggested you track these by noting the time of activity. A little work on your part will save you a lot of grief in the long run.

You may want to consider disabling ads for your own IP address and local geographic area. This will certainly prevent accidents and will not make Google mistake another user as you. You can do through the htaccess file on your web site. the process is too detailed to go into further here, but if you do a search on the engines to learn ways to access and disable portions of this log, a lot of information is readily available. By doing this, and showing Google that you have done so, you protect yourself against any possible threat from Google.

Keep your Adsense off on pop ups and pop unders. Your ads should not be displayed on content sites that promote illegal activity or tampering of the legal rights of other people or business. Included in this are the content that is considered adult or gambling in nature, or promote firearms, tobacco, or drugs of any kind. If you think that you may be breaking this rule, immediately remove your content or Adsense from the web page.

Be truthful and confess up to Google about times when you might have clicked on your own ads, whether accidentally or intentionally. Be honest about anything that you may have done that is wrong. Confessing is way better than Google learning about it eventually. It would mean eventual termination and no getting back what you have worked so hard for.

Do not tell your family or friends about Adsense on your website. Chances are they may start clicking on them to help you make money without you knowing it. They may be doing more harm to you than help by trying it in the first place.

Most pay per click networks have different measures in hand to protect website owners against click frauds. Other search engines can track more than 50 data points, IP address, browser’s information, user’s session info and pattern recognition. They also have “systems” available that detects fraud, not to mention the specialized teams monitoring how things are going and helping advertisers stop click frauds. Google has some of the best brains in the business, and it does no one any good to try to “fool” them. In addition to the algorithms that Google has in place, they also employ regular people to surf the net to find illegal sites.

Google offers suggestion on how to avoid click fraud. Using “negative keywords” can be used to keep your Adsense showing on products and services that are in no way related to yours. Add tracking URLs to your links so you can track the traffic coming from Google.

Don’t be caught in the Google click fraud. The opportunity to make a very decent income is readily available if you use common sense, do not try to cheat Google, and follow their Terms of Service. If you do these things, maybe some day you too can be a member of the FedEx Club!

Why Most People Don’t Use Effective But Free Online Marketing Tools

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

It is rather interesting that most people do not take free online marketing tools seriously. Never mind that there is plenty of evidence around and even more examples of web sites and online entrepreneurs who have taken off in a hurry using only free online marketing tools.

In a way this reaction is not surprising because we have been brought up in world where we have been taught to firmly believe in the facts of life. One of the major facts of life is that there is no such thing as a free lunch and nothing valuable costs nothing.

While all this is true, most people have failed to realize that the World Wide Web has arrived with its’ own unique and rather unorthodox but highly effective set of rules.

Even fewer have taken note of the fact that the most successful online business model so far has been based on the heavy use of free marketing tools and heavy spending in marketing comes later when the web site has already started enjoying some success.

A Famous Example
When Bill Gates was playing catch up on the internet after an initial error of judgement over the future importance of the net, one of the areas where he found himself way behind was in free email services. The likes of Yahoo already had millions of users when Hotmail was re-launched.

Did one of the richest men in the world go for prime time television to advertise his new free email service? Did he book newspaper spots across the states? Not really, he used a free online marketing strategy that worked like a dream. A brief signature at the end of each email sent out invited the recipient to open a free Hotmail email account. The rest is history. This simple referral marketing strategy that cost nothing took Hotmail from virtually zero users to millions in a few short months.

There are numerous other examples, but I shoe this one because it is somebody we all know rather well.

Conventional Advertising Does Not Work Online
There is one other reason why free online advertising tools are so effective. And this is based on the fact that conventional advertising as we have always know it has so far been a big failure online.

Banner advertisements with all the color and gimmickry was such a huge failure that it prompted somebody to come up with what they thought would solve the problem and become a huge success. I am referring to the much-disliked and extremely annoying pop-up advertisements. Even the so-called pop-under ads that are supposedly less annoying have not been received with much enthusiasm online.

All these options are not free and people have been paying good money for them.

The reason why conventional ads do not work is simple and yet most people still don’t get it. Folks do not come online to be advertised to. They come online, usually with very little time on their hands and looking for some very specific information. Is it any wonder that any form of unsolicited advertising, be it pop-up ads or unsolicited email (SPAM), is so annoying?

This is why informative well-written articles are such an effective free online marketing tool. Only those who are interested in the information you have to offer will read your article. And they do not mind whatever advertising you put in the resource box at the bottom of the article, because it does not look like advertising to them. Especially when they are interested in getting more information on the subject at hand.

Marketing Is No Longer That Simple
What people need to realize is that marketing online does not fall into the neat offline categories we have been used to.

For example the most successful online advertising has been PPC ads or Pay -Per-Click ads. The main reason is that these ads have been based on relevance to the information being looked for right from the beginning. We first saw them next to search engine results. Those ugly small text things that looked like they were part of the results searched. They have worked like magic because advertisers only pay for actual clicks on their ads, so results and response to the ads are easily quantifiable.

It should not be lost on anybody that these ads actually do not look like ads. More so now when the market leader in PPC ads, Google have their AdSense ads in small sites and blogs all over the net. There is even more emphasis on relevance to the information being looked for.

Free Is Actually Not Free
Then the other extremely important factor to note is that many of the most effective online marketing tools are really not free. For instance, even if you write your won informative articles to use for marketing purposes, this is a very time-consuming exercise. Time is even more valuable than money because unlike money, it can never be recovered when it has been lost. So it is just that people pay using some other currency.

Conclusion
Anybody planning an online marketing campaign should look very carefully at the so-called free marketing tools and options, the effectiveness of some of the techniques will surprise them.

Many people ask me how I generate hundreds of these high quality, targeted keywords every hour; so I decided to leak my #1 secret to the world. I hope that you will use this secret to your advantage and it will help you tremendously in your Pay Per Click Marketing.

And how do I know Google actually gives you the top 10 real searches?

Quote From Google (Quotation comes from: http://labs.google.com/suggestfaq.html)
Our algorithms use a wide range of information to predict the queries users are most likely to want to see. For example, Google Suggest uses data about the overall popularity of various searches to help rank the refinements it offers. An example of this type of popularity information can be found in the Google Zeitgeist. Google Suggest does not base its suggestions on your personal search history.

Now you know my secret; use it wisely…
