A New Kind of Movie Spy: The Devil’s Halo Addresses the Very Real Issue of Intellectual Piracy

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Perhaps it’s my miniscule attention span that causes my mind to wander during the complicated and technical bits that run rampant through most contemporary spy novels. I tend to doze off as soon as the technology reaches beyond my limited comprehension and the politics become too arcane.

Imagine my surprise, then, when I found myself completely wrapped up in the plot of Devil’s Halo, the newest offering by Chris Fox. It’s about a sort of movie spy, but not in the martini swilling, woman chasing James Bond sense. No, our hero is a family manalbeit a family of brainiac aerospace typeshired to foil a scheme hatched by foreign evil doers to steal one of America’s most precious commodities: blockbuster movies. Now, that’s something to which even I can relate.

To be sure, Devil’s Halo has its share of space age devices and political scheming, but it’s expertly woven into a storyline with human interest, romance, murder and even a dash or two of well-placed humor. Add a damsel in distress, a child in peril and a decidedly heroic protagonist, and you’ve got what it takes to keep me turning pages.

Mr. Fox has most certainly done his research and that, combined with his elegant prose, makes his explanations of even the most fiendishly complex mechanisms and devices a pleasure to read. Moreover, he spices his narrative with delightful bits of esoterica (would you know where to find a portrait of Einstein in stained glass?) that one can save up for those ever so boring dinner parties.

The Devil’s Halo can be had at Amazon U.K. for now, but Americans will be seeing it in bookstores by this summer. Intellectual pirates beware; you’re being watched.

Steel Barrister Bookcaseswith Perspective – Its Charming

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Whenever you go into a library you are spellbound by the large bookcases that are home to a power plant of information- books! volumes are safe and free from dirt and dust in a bookcase. Bookcases generally have horizontal compartments for keeping books. Outside glass doors are a good selection to refer and stock publications neatly.

What do you mean by a barrister bookcase?

attorneys have to show from various reference manuals for their practice. such consultation manuals cost alot and are needed often. A barrister bookcase is a kind of bookcase particularly built for stashing away such grand books used by barristers. Oak and cherry wood is the favored choice for creating these lawyers bookcases in many coatings and hues.

What was the method of keeping volumes prior to barrister bookcases?

Volumes were not found commonly, so nobody thought of how to store them.In those times, books were hand-written.They were placed in tiny containers by the affluent individuals. It was the wealthy mans privilege to own and carry books as they were not inexpensive. Such boxes fulfilled the want for a bookcase.

Soon lot of religious manuscripts and other such books were bought by the rich society. These volumes found a place in the wardrobe or on a shelf. these closets gave rise to strong bookshelves found Now.

How were the books placed in these shelves?

The books were placed in a orthodox way. They used to be piled upon each other on their sides or kept upright with their edges on the outside and the backs facing the wall. these books had a band created from leather or parchment as a cover that mentioned the title too. since this band had to be seen, the books were placed with edges out.

anybody who liked reading could buy books due to the printing design. Because the titles could be published behind the book, the edges were not facing outward any more.

Which materials were mainly employed?

These barrister bookcases utilised to consist of oak commonly. Other than that, maple, cherry and pine wood were also employed for creating a barrister bookcase. You can also go for economical choices such as steel in creating a barrister bookcase. The oldest bookcases are said to exist in England in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University. they were kept in the library in the sixteenth century.

The two major bookcase designers were Chippendale and Sheraton who made elegant bookcases glazed with tiny pills wrapped in latticework frames. Any room could look decorated with these bookcases.

How are the latest bookcases unusual?

Because a barrister might require moving in to another chambers frequently, a portable barrister bookcase has been designed to service their wants. It consists of many shelf units that can be combined to assemble a cabinet. all it takes to be a finish barrister bookcase is an additional cap and footstall. The convenience of this bookcase rests in the fact that each shelf can be transported as a unique unit with all its contents still within!

Review: A Circle of Dreams

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Author: Annie Rogers
ISBN: 0977018318

With A Circle of Dreams Annie Rogers continues the saga of the Demontagne-Diamant families for what turns out to be a showdown between the world of the dead, the spirit of Anne-Cecile Diamant, who lived in St. Lucia over two hundred years ago, and the world of the living, the cross-cultured descendents of her lost son Philippe.

Our narrative picks up where the author’s debut novel, A Dream Across Time left off. The story opens with Andre and Jamie Demontagne on their way home from Martinique with their new born son, Philippe. During the car ride to their Jumeaux Estate in St. Lucia, Jamie becomes terribly upset when she hears the crying and moaning of a woman in the wind, bringing back memories of an unpleasant past experience when she was lost in the forest pursuing a woman’s cry.

The couple manages to arrive home safe and sound and are greeted by their four-year old twin daughters, Yvie and Lissa, as well as a close family friend and employee, Bertille, who over the years has played a very important and significant role in their lives. We are reminded, if you did not read the first novel, that it was Bertille who came to Jamie’s rescue, when she was lost in the forest, and it was also this same woman who had become a constant bastion of support.

When Bertille learns that Philippe had been named after Anne-Cecile Diamant’s lost son, her instant response is: “Choosing the name of that lost child tempts the spirits.” Even Philippe’s grandmother, Clarisse, feels the same way, although this does prevent her from giving her grandson a two- hundred year old handmade laced yellowed linen baby’s cap that now hangs over his crib. Jamie, on seeing the baby’s cap, experiences an unexplained feeling that she can’t quite put her finger on, all of which sets the stage for the remainder of the novel.

Woven into the plot are Lissa’s mystical and extraordinary powers that are used to protect her brother, Philippe. He is haunted by spirits who whirl around and pull on him; however, it is his sister Lissa who is able to pull him back from these anxious ghosts and his unpredictable and scary episodes which cause him to lose touch with reality. Her powers extend to her ability to live in the spiritual world, to see around the corners of the future and to fly in her dreams. It also has enabled her to see a ghostlike figure of a sad woman dressed in a long dress crying out for help and begging her to find her lost son.

One of the principal strengths of this novel is the facility with time, as the authors smoothly weave family history into the narrative. Another is the way in which suspense is built up with curiosity and delay. Readers really want to know what will happen to Philippe, and the authors do not allow the answer to emerge until our interest has been heightened. All of this makes for some very heady and at times chilling reading!

Book Review – As the Darkness Deepens by Michael Cale

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Newton’s Third Law of Motions states that “For ever action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Michael Cale’s latest novel, As the Darkness Deepens, is an interesting study in this universal law as it relates to the forces of good and evil. While this is a common storyline, Cale’s strong characterization and the powerful climax give an otherwise trite subject substance to formulate a solid story.

We first meet the unassuming Christopher Jones walking his seven-year-old daughter, Sally, to school. After hugs and a kiss, Christopher sends his child across the street, when suddenly a careening car slams into Sally, mortally wounding her. In the terror of the moment, Christopher draws upon a mysterious power to heal his daughter, saving her life. This act of love creates an equal and opposite reaction that literally births the story’s primary antagonist.

Christopher discovers a renewed sense of self and direction. He transforms from a soft-spoken pushover to a man filled with the need to use his new power for the good of humanity. Eventually, word of his powers spread, and he attracts hundreds and thousands of the hopeless, the infirm, and the insane. Christopher becomes nothing more than a pinball, bouncing off those who want to help to those wanting to take advantage and back again.

Cale, whose 2001 novel, The Room of Shrunken Souls, was an Eppie Finalist, knows how to construct a solid story. Here he does a satisfactory job of blending the good and evil in greedy entertainment executives, religious cults, and the Catholic Church. When all three of these groups collide in the dramatic finale, the reader is given a powerful overview of the morale fallacies harbored in day-to-day dogma. Effectively using the dingy backdrop of south Los Angeles, he builds an array of vivid character that overflow from the 150 page novel.

Despite several annoying dialogue tics and a sometimes sloppy narrative style, Cales nails the characters and setting. I would recommend As the Darkness Deepens to readers as a study in the evil side of morality bringing destruction to good.

Autumn in the Country

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Autumn in the Country is one book in the SENIOR STORIES series of color photography books with simple text designed to stimulate conversation and interaction between seniors with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. The readers will take a visual trip through the countryside to see fall foliage, apple picking, and a country market with apple cider, pots of mums, and piles of pumpkins for sale. The text invites the senior readers to tell what they like along the way, whether they prefer apple pie or pumpkin pie, and whether they’ve ever carved a jack-o’-lantern…Seniors might tell their own autumn memories, or tell a new story about a photo, or just enjoy looking at the images!

Jed Levine, Executive Vice President of the New York City Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, writes,”Autumn in the Country is a book that can be shared by two people or enjoyed alone. For a person with dementia, these evocative pictures may momentarily jog a memory like the taste of a fresh apple pie or the fun of carving a jack-o’-lantern, reawakening a lost experience. These images of life’s pleasures have the potential to stimulate conversation by rekindling warm feelings, which are captured in the pages of this special book.”

The author hopes both seniors and caregivers enjoy sharing the autumn scenes.

The Story Behind Six Months to Live

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Six Months to Live is a first of its kind. You may find the story behind the writing of this book interesting.

23 years ago I learned how to stop causing arthritis and other diseases. Within two months from the date that I removed the cause, my pain was gone. Over the next two decades I struggled to teach anyone who would listen what I learned about health.

I worked at many jobs to make a living while teaching anyone who would listen. The biggest problem I had was getting people to believe that they could really change what they eat and their body could heal itself.

Well I had been praying for years about how to reach into the homes of people all over the world and tell them the message that they don’t have to be sick.

My mother was in a nursing home. I could have helped her but I did not have the facilities or the money to do more than visit her. I desperately wanted to share the message with her and the world, in a way that gain her interest in learning more.

I had been watching TV programs like Survivor, and Lost. I have watched movies like Swiss Family Robinson, and countless others where someone gets stranded on a deserted island or dumped into difficult circumstances with nothing.

My mother watched Six Days and Seven Nights over and over in the nursing home. I wondered why there were no fiction books that taught the truth about health?

One night in March of 2004 I woke up with a story in my head. I could not set aside. I had to start writing. A few days later I was fired from my job. I had missed some tiny scratches about the size of this ( , ) comma.

Any way I went home and kept writing until I had the entire story down. Then I went to work trying to clean it up while I contacted a publisher.

While looking for a publisher I sent the rough draft to some people I new on the net, and some friends here in Michigan.

I mentioned the publisher in the book, so I thought that they would be the obvious choice.

I contacted them. I was given a person named Linda to talk to and she agreed to read the book.

That was the beginning of an exciting summer.

Linda read the book and loved it. She got in my corner and was instrumental in getting the publisher to take on my book. We spent the next 6 months emailing and phoning back and forth through the editing process. Then with the cover and layout it started all over again.

In the middle of the process I got word from a woman who read the rough draft. She became very interested in what I had to say on health since she had been bed redden because of severe rheumatoid arthritis.

Shortly after we began the editing process she notified me that she was up and getting active and her pain had been reduced 70%

Before we started the cover design process she contacted me again to tell me that I had saved her life. Her pain was all gone and both her and her husband were healthy and thankful for my ministry.

You can immagine that that was a real boost to me. It was what kept me going when it looked like it wouldnever end.

The end result is that a year after I had the idea dumped into my head, my book was in print.

If you would have asked me even a month before I started writing Six Months to Live, if I would consider writing a fiction book, I would have laughed in your face. I took basic English in high school. I took the minimum English classes in the college I went to. Creative writing was not something that I thought I would be good at. I never considered myself a story teller.

I had written many articles about health. But the thought of writing a fiction story never crossed my mind. I was an avid reader of good Christian novels. They had an influence on my writing style.

Since Six Months to Live came out I have written two more books, and am working on more in my spare time when I have a creative moment.

God in His infinite wisdom can work through the most unlikely people.

I hope this encourages someone to write a really good story. If I can do it, you can.

Fern’s Dragon – Book Review

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

“Fern’s Dragon is a wonderfully fun read that stimulates the
imagination of both young people and the young-at-heart
alike. It is a good mystery-fantasy story that is artfully
composed.

Fern is a bright, artistic young girl who is utterly fascinated
with dragons. One day she created a masterpiece with
beach sand and loved it so much that she was reluctant to
leave her dragon, Nogard. When her mother brought Fern to
visit Norgard, they were shocked to discover he was
missing. Later that night, Fern is visited by Norgard, who
begs for her help in saving dragon-kind.

Little Fern finds herself leading the last of the race of
dragons, following clues and trying to piece together a way
to save the dragon king – the only dragon with the power to
stop the catastrophe about to fall.

David Wills has done a superb job on this children’s book.
His use of colors and visually stimulating words is sure to
spark the imagination. The light ending will leave a smile on
the readers’ face.

I highly recommend this book to parents, as they are
unlikely to become bored with their children begging to have
the story repeatedly read to them. I know I certainly enjoyed
it.”

Proven Secrets of Writing and Publishing Your Own Book… In Less Than a Week!

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

In their ebook “How To Write And Publish Your Own Ebook…
In As Little As 7 Days”, Jim Edwards and Joe Vitale teach
you how to adapt a proven ebook writing formula to vastly
improve the performance of your own ebook writing
techniques. Instead of re-inventing the wheel, you are
taught how to find a topic, write about it and produce your
own ebook, sometimes in as little as 7 days, reducing the
trial and error sometimes associated with writing your own
ebook.

Of course, we know about ebooks don’t we? You cannot log on
without being offered one. There are various degrees of
credibility associated with ebooks from the brilliant
informative ebooks that you hope that you are buying to the
downright useless regurgitated rubbish that you are
sometimes duped into buying. Well, we do not want to go
down that route do we? No of course we don’t, we want to
produce a well thought out, well written and informative
ebook that not only you will be proud of producing, but also
an ebook that gives people value for money. So, having got
that goal established, how do you even begin to research a
subject that everyone is looking for and put it into words
in the form of an ebook?

The authors are arguably two of the best exponents of the
written word on the internet. Their step by step
instructions in the “How To Write And Publish Your Own
Ebook….In As Little As 7 Days” takes you logically and
systematically through the creation process right through to
the finished product. Their track record for writing
informative and educational ebooks and articles, that have
helped thousands of internet entrepenuers, is second to
none.

At over 200 pages long, “How To Write And Publish Your Own
Ebook….In As Little As 7 Days” has alot to offer those who
really do not know where to start when writing an ebook. Of
course, even those who are adept at stringing a sentence
together will probably find something useful in the book.

“How To Write And Publish Your Own Ebook…In As Little As 7
Days” is designed to teach you:

How to conceive an idea for an ebook that has a market with people willing to pay or it – either directly or
indirectly.

How to write your ebook quickly and concisely in a way that conveys information so that people can use and implement it quickly.

Take positive action towards selling your ebook online by giving you a road map to start marketing your ebook on the internet.

The main instructional section is 80 pages in length and
filled with informative and motivational text. So instead
of: write a book, look for a market, hope and then give up
what about: identify a niche market, identify needs, wants
and problems, write a book that satisfies those requirements
and then market your book to your niche and make some
money.

If you think you cannot write, think you do not have
anything to say or you do not want to write a full length
ebook, that’s okay, every eventuality is covered to get you
to start writing. I mean let’s face it, how much motivation
do you need? I bet if you were offered $50.000 to
write a short ebook you would soon get your pen and paper
out!

Of course, there has to be constructive criticism and for me, I get bored with featured authors who contribute to add a few more pages to the ebook. However, you cannot dismiss the valuable advice of Yanik Silver, Kevin Donlin or Neil
Shearing whose life experiences are included – with
appropriate links to their websites of course! However
irritating these featured articles are (and they will appear
in other ebooks as well) they do provide a valuable in site
into how they got to where they are now. Just remember to
concentrate on one thing – writing and publishing an ebook -
do not get hijacked by outgoing links to other sites.

“How To Write And Publish Your Own Ebook…..In As Little As
7 Days” is finished off with bonus reports for accepting
credit cards, ebook cover design, web hosting and more. All
designed to get your finished product published and making
money.

If you are looking for well written, informative and value
for money instructions on how to write your own ebook,
whether it is 10 pages or 1000 pages, then I believe that
this ebook does deliver on its promise to get you to write
an ebook in as little as 7 days. The only thing it cannot do
is write it for you.

The Seventh Jewel – Book Review

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

The Seventh Jewel is a fantasy-adventure fiction geared for
youth (ages 11 and up). J.J. Pritchard crammed several
tantalizing elements in only 278 pages. The reader is taken
on a journey that involves a treasure hunt, a noble quest and
the discovery of an ancient civilization. The author touches
upon family relationships, dealing with death and coming to
terms with loosing a limb. The Seventh Jewel is also an
educational book that brings up serious issues from poverty
to discrimination. Mr. Pritchard’s approach to encourage
readers to use his glossary of the ancient Inca language
was very well done.

J.J. Pritchard, author of 6 books including The Seventh
Jewel, has participated in a climbing expedition in Peru. His
first hand knowledge of Peru, global warming and ancient
Inca history is shown by tasteful and accurate use of facts.
He couples this with highly plausible events throughout the
story, making this book very well rounded, unique and
realistic.

There are four main characters: Emma, a gutsy and witty
teenage amputee, teaches the reader understanding and
respect for what amputees experience. I think she could be
a role model for many readers. Joel, her brave 11-year-old
brother, displays a loyal adventurous heart. Uncle Jake, a
well-connected treasure hunter by trade, plays the part of a
hero and protector during a few points in the story. Estrella,
a beautiful professor, has a chip on her shoulder that
begins to melt when she meets Uncle Jake. Her life long
dream is to honor her people by discovering the mysterious
jewel of the Ancient Inca.

They are all thrown together when scientists discover that
knowledge of an extremely rare element may exist in the
ancient records of the Inca. This element has the potential
to combat global warming and it is worth an inconceivable
amount of money. Because of this value, people of
questionable character are attracted to treasure hunt – but
they play by their own rules and answer to their own ethics.

The Seventh Jewel was an exceptional read. I highly
encourage readers to pick up a copy of J.J. Pritchard’s latest
book. You won’t be disappointed!
