In the world of poker, there are a few key distinctions that one should remember when observing their adversaries. Several professionals on the World Poker Tour confer that most people can be broken down into two types and two categories: Aggressive or Passive, and Tight and Loose. That gives you four possible combinations of what you could be facing. So let’s break that down so you can have a simple formula for assessing what kind of players you’re up against.

The first is passive poker. A passive player is also known as a calling station. They rarely initiate bets, and when they do play a hand, it’s usually not played aggressively. It’s all about call, call, call. They tend to give up easily if they’re not comfortable calling a high bet. If they don’t have to, they won’t be risking any money. This type of player checks often, whether he should fold or not, and likes to stick around just to see the cards.

Next is the aggressive poker player. This player tends bet all the time. If he’s got a hand, he’s betting it. He leads off the betting whenever he can, and generally raises if someone in front of him bets. If he has a good hand, you can believe he’s going to bet it and bet it hard. Unless he has to, this player is not looking to fold. He’ll bluff and try to get you off hands at every opportunity.
