A common factor is going to be a number that will evenly divide into both numbers. An example would be 3 is a common factor for 6 and 12. Three will equally divide into 6 and into 12. You could also look at 2 being a common factor for 4 and 14. You will repeat this same procedure until there are no common factors left. You can also do this same process by finding the greatest common factor of both the numerator and the denominator. You will divide the numerator and the denominator by the greatest common factor instead of the common factor.

I have been a college professor for nearly twenty years. I say that only to give background to the piece of advice that I am about to share with you. I’m often asked by students that are about to head off to college if I have any words of wisdom or pieces of advice to share with them. Yes, I do. I have a lot of advice for students entering college. The college world is drastially different than life growing up with your family. There is much I could share, but I’ll stick to one piece of advice that might surprise you: learn to love book summaries.

What? Not the advice you were expecting? Well, there you have it. My number one piece of advice (academically anyway) for students entering college. You are surprised by this because I have already said that I am a college professor. Well, I’ll explain why book summaries can save your college experience. It is really quite simple.

College isn’t easy. You’ve probably heard that from every person you know that has been in college and lived to talk about it. It is not high school anymore, and so everything is cranked up a level and you’ll find that more is required of you in college. Having more required of you also means that more books are assigned to you and that more reading is required of you. Hence my advice about book summaries.

Book summaries are one of the greatest tools you can use to get the most information out of all there is to know. For example, if you have a week where you are assigned a different book to read in each of your five classes, then there is no way that you’ll be able to read each book entirely. Instead, go for book summaries.

Book summaries can often be found in libaries or at online sources. Do some research before you head off to college and see what sources of book summaries you can find. Another tip that one of my own college professors gave me during college was to read the introduction or opening chapter of every book, then read only the first and last sentences of each paragraph throughout the book until you reached the summary chapter which you would read entirely. He gave me this method and I used it throughout college and then in grad school. It is a way of making your own book summaries when you cannot get ahold of one.

College is hard enough without having to balance all the reading that is required. Get your hands on book summaries and your college experience will be easier, less stressful and more full of the things you want to enjoy.

My first foreign language in school was Latin – a great language to prepare you for any university. But then we moved, and the only language offered was Spanish. I found Spanish more fun, because people in West Texas actually spoke it, where as Latin was mostly just reading and learning complex grammar. I talk to people all the time that took a language in high-school, but they still graduate without being able to speak the language. Often, a person can read and write the language, but cannot teach it. Our teacher emphasized conversation and actually speaking the language. During high school, I had two labor-type jobs, so I got to work with several Spanish speakers. I can’t repeat many of the “colorful metaphors” that I learned, but it was a good experience. It actually did help reinforce what I was learning in school. Every summer, our Spanish teacher took a group to Mexico city. Travel is, of course, a great way to further one’s language skills. I took lot’s of pictures, created a scrapbook accompanied with an audio tape, and got three hours credit for the trip from a nearby community college. When I went to college, I took CLEP tests – advanced placement tests for Spanish. They actually awarded me 14 college credits from my test results. Wow – that saved me one entire semester in college. In college, I didn’t major in Spanish, but almost got a minor. If I remember correctly, I had one class in conversational Spanish, and two classes in Spanish literature. I was also involved with Spanish Clubs and Honor Society on campus. Later, when I was out in the working world, I did self self-study in French, Portugese, and Hebrew. I discovered the Pimsleur system and the government FSI courses (this was still 10 years before the internet!). I went on a couple of trips to Brazil, where I spoke probably butchered my limited Portugese with a lot of Spanish, but I could make myself understood. I got a consulting position in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1995. If would have learned more if I would have lived with a family, instead of living by myself. There were several English-only consultants in my office, and speaking Spanish really wasn’t required, but I tried when possible, and was encouraged by my Puerto Rican co-workers. After burning a lot of money on dozens of differents types of language courses, I got a good feel for which ones worked, and which ones didn’t. Eventually, I started creating my own courses for Hebrew and Spanish, and started building my own Spanish online learning center.
